Discover more about Fortress of Niha

The Fortress of Niha, a historical landmark in the Chouf region of Lebanon, presents a captivating journey into the past. Carved into a cliff overlooking the Bisri and Aray valleys, the fortress has been strategically important for centuries. First mentioned in historical records in 975 AD, it has been controlled by various powers, including Crusaders and local Muslims. The fortress is shaped like a cave, extending over a hundred meters deep into the rock. Inside, chambers and rooms were excavated to shelter soldiers and store provisions. Water was supplied by a rain collecting system and a spring. The fortress was well-fortified, featuring a wall with openings. Several levels of habitations were built against the cliff, using beams for support. In 1261, the fortress was destroyed, but it was rebuilt in 1270 by Mamluk leader Baibars. It is said that Emir Qorqomaz Maan took refuge there in 1585, and Emir Fakhr-al-Din II may have also sought shelter there in 1635. Today, the Fortress of Niha is a cultural heritage site within the Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve. Visitors can explore the fortress and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
