Discover more about Hammam Al Jadeed حمام الجديد

Hammam Al Jadeed, meaning "New Bath," is the largest and most significant hammam in Sidon's Old City. Built in 1720 by Mustafa Hammoud, it represents a unique example of Ottoman ornamentation. The hammam served as a vital social, economic, and cultural hub until the late 1940s when it was closed. The reason for its closure was the increased access to private water supplies in homes, which decreased the demand for public bathhouses. In 2018, the Sharqy Foundation for Cultural Development and Innovation acquired the long-forgotten building complex. Said Bacho, the Foundation's Founder and Chairman, and his team began the delicate process of uncovering and preserving the hammam's original architectural features. The restored hammam reopened to the public in May 2019, after nearly 70 years of closure. Today, Hammam Al Jadeed hosts exhibitions and cultural events, offering visitors a glimpse into the history of therapeutic bathing practices and the architectural splendor of the Ottoman era. Visitors can wander through the halls, encountering exhibits that highlight the importance of hammam culture in Lebanese society, including the rituals associated with these bathhouses. The museum also features informative displays about local customs, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in understanding the social and historical context of the region.
