Royal Natal National Park, established in 1916, is a stunning protected area within the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The park is best known for the Drakensberg Amphitheatre, a colossal rock wall stretching approximately 5 kilometers in length and towering over 1000 meters in height. From the summit of the Amphitheatre, the Tugela Falls plunges 948 meters in a series of leaps, marking it as the world's second-highest waterfall. The park's history dates back to 1908 when the idea of establishing a national park in the Drakensberg was conceived. The Royal Family's visit in 1947 led to the park being renamed 'Royal Natal National Park'. The park is managed by KZN Wildlife, the provincial conservation body. The park offers a variety of activities, with hiking being the most popular. Trails range from easy walks to challenging multi-day hikes, catering to all fitness levels. Visitors can explore the Tugela Gorge, hike to the top of the Amphitheatre, or enjoy shorter walks to the Cascades and Fairy Glen. The park is also home to diverse flora and fauna, including bushbuck, baboons, rock dassies, and various bird species. Mont-aux-Sources, the highest peak of the plateau, is the source of the Tugela River and eight other rivers. In winter, the upper reaches of the Tugela Falls can freeze, creating dazzling ice columns. The park's diverse landscapes and stunning views make it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
