Public Transport

From Maseru, take a minibus taxi to Matsieng. The fare is approximately 13 LSL. Ask the driver to drop you off near the Royal Palace, a well-known landmark in the village. From there, it's a short walk to the palace grounds. Note that taxi fares are subject to change.

Car

From Maseru, drive east on the A1 towards Matsieng. Follow the signs to the Royal Palace in Matsieng. The drive takes about one hour, depending on traffic. Be aware of livestock crossing the road.

Located in the small village of Matsieng, the Royal Palace has been the heart of Lesotho's monarchy since the 19th century. Matsieng, meaning 'Place of Letsie', was established by Letsie I, son of the founder of the Basotho nation, Moshoeshoe I. The village features a mix of traditional Basotho rondavels and colonial sandstone buildings.While the palace buildings are not accessible to tourists, the palace grounds evoke the grandeur of Basotho royalty. The palace is a reminder of Lesotho's past and the spirit of its people. The Royal Archives and Museum, located in the old office of Queen Regent 'Mantsebo Seeiso and King Moshoeshoe II, preserves royal documents and historical records.Matsieng offers visitors a glimpse into Lesotho's history and culture, with opportunities to explore the surrounding natural landscapes.
