Getting There

  • Driving

The final approach to Sani Pass involves driving from Underberg, the closest town in South Africa. From Underberg, follow the R617 and then the P318 to the Sani Pass. The road leading to the South African border post is paved. However, after crossing the South African border, the road becomes a steep, gravel track accessible only by 4x4 vehicles. Ensure you have a valid passport and vehicle documentation for border crossing. There is no entrance fee to drive the Sani Pass, but a tourist levy of R75 is charged for vehicles entering Lesotho. Be prepared for potential delays at both border posts.

  • Guided Tour

For those without a 4x4 or off-road driving experience, joining a guided tour from Underberg is highly recommended. Several tour operators offer day trips to Sani Pass, including transportation in a 4x4 vehicle, a knowledgeable guide, and visits to a Basotho village and the highest pub in Africa. Tours typically range from R995 to R1400 per person, excluding lunch. The Lesotho Government has introduced a Tourist Levy of R50 per person for organized tours until 31/10/24, and from then on, it will be R100.

Discover more about Sani Pass

Sani Pass is more than just a road; it's an experience. This iconic mountain pass, located in the Drakensberg Mountains, links KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, with the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. The pass ascends 1,332 meters in just 9 kilometers, climbing from 1,544 meters to a summit of 2,876 meters above sea level. This dramatic ascent has earned it the nickname 'The Roof of Africa'. Originally a mule track used for trade, the pass was developed in the early 20th century and later improved for motor vehicles. In 1948, Godfrey Edmonds was the first to drive a vehicle up the pass. Today, it remains a challenging 4x4 route with steep gradients, hairpin turns, and rugged gravel roads. The Sani Pass offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Drakensberg Mountains, with dramatic landscapes and unique photo opportunities. At the summit, travelers cross the border into Lesotho and are often greeted with a visit to a traditional Basotho village, offering a glimpse into the local culture. Many tours include a stop at the Sani Mountain Lodge, home to the highest pub in Africa, where visitors can enjoy a drink or a meal while taking in the stunning views. Be prepared for unpredictable weather, and always check road conditions before attempting the pass.
