Discover more about Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge Island 1

Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge Island 1 is one of several islands that make up the Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge in Liberia. This unique sanctuary provides a safe haven for over 60 chimpanzees who have been rescued from a variety of difficult situations, including biomedical research facilities and the illegal wildlife trade. In 1974, a research laboratory was established in Liberia, where over 400 chimpanzees were subjected to invasive experiments for three decades. Ethical concerns grew regarding the use of chimpanzees in research, leading to the closure of these labs in the early 2000s. The chimpanzees were moved to nearby islands, but with limited infrastructure to support their care. In 2015, Humane Society International (HSI) stepped in to provide care for the remaining chimpanzees, later assuming responsibility for their lifetime care. Today, the refuge provides a near-wild habitat for the chimps, with caregivers visiting twice daily to provide food and fresh water. The refuge is currently undergoing upgrades to improve veterinary care and provide better shelter for the chimpanzees. Visitors to Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge Island 1 can witness the heartwarming stories of these resilient animals and learn about the challenges they have overcome. The refuge serves as a center for raising awareness and advocating for wildlife preservation, encouraging visitors to consider their role in protecting these incredible creatures.
