Discover more about Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection

Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection (LCRP) stands as a beacon of hope for chimpanzees in Liberia, offering sanctuary to those orphaned by the devastating bushmeat and illegal pet trades. Founded by Jenny and Jimmy Desmond in 2016, LCRP is the first and only chimpanzee sanctuary in Liberia. The organization's mission extends beyond rescue, focusing on the rehabilitation, protection, and conservation of both rescued and wild chimpanzees. LCRP is located in the Marshall Wetlands, a unique estuarine habitat characterized by vast mangrove forests and rich biodiversity. This location provides a secure and natural environment for the rescued chimpanzees, allowing them to live in a setting that closely mimics their natural habitat. The sanctuary spans over 450 acres of land, offering ample space for the chimpanzees to roam and socialize. LCRP's work involves rescuing chimpanzees, many of whom are still infants or young children, and providing them with 24-hour care. The sanctuary has a night dormitory, nursery, and facilities for food preparation and management. The ultimate goal is to integrate these rescued individuals into a family, allowing them to live together in a sanctuary that simulates a life in the wild as closely as possible. LCRP also partners with local communities to implement programs focused on climate-smart agriculture, business development, and conservation education.
