Lake Piso: Liberia's Coastal Gem

Lake Piso, also called Fisherman's Lake or Lake Pisu, is a significant natural feature in western Liberia. Located in Grand Cape Mount County, near the town of Robertsport, this oblong tidal lagoon spans approximately 103 square kilometers. Its name comes from a local term meaning "pigeon's hole," referencing the pigeons that once frequented the lake. The lake is set apart from the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow inlet known as the "bar mouth". Various rivers and creeks, including Mole Creek and the Mafa River, flow into the lake, creating a brackish environment. This unique estuarine ecosystem supports a diverse array of flora and fauna. Several islands dot the lake, including Massatin Island, serving as havens for monkeys and birds. Historically, Lake Piso has been a vital resource and even a refuge for local communities. During World War II, it served as a military base for Allied seaplanes. It also provided temporary shelter for Liberians during the civil wars. The lake is recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International, attracting birdwatchers with its significant populations of various bird species. Visitors can engage with local communities, explore nearby wetlands, and learn about the area's rich culture.
