Lake Piso, also called Fisherman's Lake or Lake Pisu, is a significant natural feature in western Liberia. Located in Grand Cape Mount County, near the town of Robertsport, this oblong tidal lagoon spans approximately 103 square kilometers. Its name comes from a local term meaning "pigeon's hole," referencing the pigeons that once frequented the lake.The lake is set apart from the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow inlet known as the "bar mouth". Various rivers and creeks, including Mole Creek and the Mafa River, flow into the lake, creating a brackish environment. This unique estuarine ecosystem supports a diverse array of flora and fauna. Several islands dot the lake, including Massatin Island, serving as havens for monkeys and birds.Historically, Lake Piso has been a vital resource and even a refuge for local communities. During World War II, it served as a military base for Allied seaplanes. It also provided temporary shelter for Liberians during the civil wars.
