Born in Vaduz in 1839, Rheinberger gained international recognition for his musical compositions and served as a professor. The monument itself features a bronze bust of Rheinberger on a stone plinth. A relief with a lyre, symbolizing music, is to the left of the bust. An inscription plaque to the right reads: 'SEINEM GROSSEN SOHNE / DEM KOMPONISTEN JOSEF GABRIEL VON RHEINBERGER / GEHEIMRAT UND PROFESSOR / 1839 VADUZ 1910 MÜNCHEN / ERRICHTET LIECHTENSTEIN DIES EHRENMAL'. This translates to: 'To his great son, the composer Josef Gabriel von Rheinberger, Privy Councilor and Professor, born 1839 in Vaduz, died 1910 in Munich, Liechtenstein erected this memorial'. The monument was created in 1939, on the 100th anniversary of Rheinberger's birth. Franz Marcel Fischer won an artistic competition, and his project was erected in 1940 in front of the Rheinbergerhaus. The Rheinbergerhaus is a historical building in the center of Vaduz and the birthplace of the composer. Today, the Liechtenstein Music School uses the building.
