Herz Jesu Church: A Neo-Gothic Masterpiece in Bregenz

Herz Jesu Church, or the Church of the Sacred Heart, is a prominent Roman Catholic parish church in Bregenz, Austria. Constructed in the Neo-Gothic style between 1905 and 1912, it was designed by architect Josef Cades. The church was built after Vorarlberg celebrated the anniversary of its consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The basilica features a cruciform layout with a three-nave design and two towering spires that reach 62 meters. The double-tower facade is reminiscent of Norman architecture. Inside, the clerestory, almost twice the height of the side aisles, allows natural light to flood the central nave through tripartite windows. The church is home to a remarkable organ, built between 1928 and 1931, featuring 53 registers and 4,650 pipes. Over the years, Herz Jesu Church has undergone several renovations and restorations. In 1969, the church square and stairs were renovated, and in 1994, the organ was restored. In 1958, the church became an independent parish. Today, Herz Jesu Church is not only a place of worship but also a captivating blend of art, history, and spirituality, drawing tourists from all over the world.
