Liechtenstein National Museum: A Journey Through the Principality's History
Discover Liechtenstein's heritage at the National Museum in Vaduz, from prehistoric finds to royal treasures and natural wonders.
The Liechtenstein National Museum (Liechtensteinisches Landesmuseum) in Vaduz serves as the primary museum of the country, offering visitors a deep dive into its cultural heritage and history. Housed in a historical building dating back to 1438, which once functioned as a princely tavern, customs house, and seat of government, the museum itself is an artifact. The building's renovation and expansion between 1998 and 2008 incorporated three buildings, blending modern architecture with traditional elements. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe even visited the tavern during his travels in 1788. The museum's collection spans from prehistoric times to the present day, with exhibits covering archaeology, history, art, culture, customs, industry, nature, and philately. Visitors can explore artifacts, archaeological finds, models, reliefs, weapons, and more. The natural history section displays ornithology, botany, and local fauna and flora. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures, workshops and events. The Liechtenstein National Museum Foundation was established in 1972, and the Postal Museum became part of the National Museum in 2006. In addition to the main museum, visitors can explore the Treasure Chamber, which features precious items from five centuries, and the Farmhouse Museum in Schellenberg, showcasing rural life.
