Vaduz Castle: Liechtenstein's Royal Residence

Vaduz Castle, or Schloss Vaduz in German, is the prominent landmark of Liechtenstein's capital city, standing approximately 120 meters above Vaduz. Its origins trace back to the 12th century, with the keep being among the first sections constructed. The castle initially served as a fortress, controlling key Alpine pass and trade routes. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone numerous expansions and renovations. It came into the possession of the House of Liechtenstein in 1712. The castle fell into disrepair but was thoroughly restored between 1905 and 1912. In 1939, Prince Franz Josef II moved in with his family, establishing it as their permanent residence. Today, Vaduz Castle is not open to the public, as it serves as the private home of the Princely Family. However, the castle's exterior can be admired from various vantage points in and around Vaduz. The best views can be found along the path leading up to the castle. On Liechtenstein's National Day, August 15th, visitors are sometimes invited to the castle grounds.
