Discover more about Pulverturm

The Pulverturm, a stout circular tower, stands on the western tip of Lindau Island, a testament to the town's rich history. Constructed in 1508 as part of Lindau's fortifications, the tower initially served as a crucial defensive structure. Its strategic position allowed it to guard the harbor entrance and the town itself. In 1629, the tower's tent roof was lowered to reduce its vulnerability during attacks, a decision that proved effective as the Pulverturm survived the Thirty Years' War unscathed. By the end of the 18th century, its role shifted, becoming a storage facility for the Lindau militia's gunpowder, hence its name. In 1898, the tower was transformed into a summer residence for Lindau's mayor, Dr. Heinrich Schützinger. Architect Friedrich von Thiersch oversaw the conversion of the interior into living spaces, adding a lounge and staircase. Today, the Pulverturm is owned by the Lindau public utility company and serves as a unique venue for conferences and celebrations. While the tower's interior is not generally open to the public, its exterior can be admired from the surrounding parkland.
