Discover more about Theater Chur

Theater Chur, formerly known as Stadttheater Chur, stands as the largest theater in the Canton of Graubünden. With a history dating back to 1876, the theater has consistently offered a vibrant program of performances, contributing significantly to Chur's cultural landscape. The theater's location has evolved over the years. Originally situated at Zeughausstrasse 6, it moved in 1959 to its current building on Theaterplatz, adjacent to the Grossratsgebäude. This modern building emerged from the conversion of a former armoury, a project undertaken by architect Martin Risch. The armoury, designed by Johannes Ludwig in the mid-19th century, showcased rounded arches typical of the era's architectural style. Throughout its history, Theater Chur has attracted notable figures and hosted significant events. In 1948, Bertolt Brecht and Caspar Neher staged the world premiere of Brecht's Antigone here. The theater has also undergone periods of transformation, including a design competition in 2015 won by Raphael Zuber for a new entrance, though the design was never implemented. Today, Theater Chur continues to foster cultural dialogue through a diverse program that includes international productions, national co-productions, and regional collaborations. From theater and music to dance and events for young audiences, the theater offers something for everyone. The Café Bar on the first floor enhances the experience, open before, during, and after performances.
