Discover more about Broderbrunnen

The Broderbrunnen, situated on Lindenplatz in St. Gallen, Switzerland, is more than just a fountain; it's a symbol of the city's history and artistic heritage. Created by Toggenburg sculptor August Bösch in 1896, it commemorates the introduction of Lake Constance water to St. Gallen households. The fountain's design is inspired by Roman-Baroque styles and features a triangular shape with a reddish granite basin. The central column showcases intricate sculptures, including three boys riding a goose, dolphin and turtle. At the top, a group of nymphs symbolizes the blessings of water. The Broderbrunnen also holds a few secrets. The statue is named after Hans Broder, a cantonal judge who bequeathed money to the city. During its construction, the choice of a model from Zurich for the central nymph caused a scandal. Today, the original statues are housed in the Historical Museum, with bronze copies standing in their place. Located in the heart of St. Gallen's Old Town, the Broderbrunnen is easily accessible and surrounded by other attractions. It's a great place to relax while exploring the city center.
