Discover more about Grossratsgebäude

The Grossratsgebäude (Grand Council Building) in Chur serves as the meeting place for the Grosser Rat, the parliamentary legislative body of Graubünden. Located north of the Old Town, near the Theater Chur, the building has a rich history. Constructed between 1861 and 1863 by architect Johannes Ludwig, the building initially served as an armory, showcasing a Neo-Renaissance style. The design, with its rounded arches, reflects architectural trends drawing on the Italian Medieval era. In 1959, architect Martin Risch led a project to divide the building, creating separate spaces for the theater and the parliament. In 2008-2009, architect Valerio Olgiati redesigned the entrance area. The Grand Council Chamber features 40 coat-of-arms shields representing the 39 municipalities of Graubünden and the cantonal coat-of-arms, created in 1960 by Giuseppe Scartezzini. Today, the Grossratsgebäude stands as a symbol of Graubünden's political heritage and architectural evolution.
