    Discover more about Reformierte Martinskirche

The Reformierte Martinskirche, situated in the heart of Chur, Switzerland, is a captivating blend of historical and architectural significance. With origins tracing back to 769 AD, the church has evolved through centuries, embracing both Romanesque and Gothic styles. Originally a Carolingian construction from the 8th century, the church was dedicated to Saint Martin, a bishop known for his piety. The church's history is marked by a donation from Bishop Tello around 769 AD. Archaeological evidence suggests Christian worship may have occurred on the site as early as the 5th century. The present structure took shape over two main periods: the nave and western tower were built in the Romanesque style in the late 13th century, while the choir and sacristy were added in the Gothic style during the mid-15th century. A fire in 1464 led to its partial destruction, but it was soon rebuilt in the late Gothic style. Inside, visitors can admire stunning frescoes from the medieval and Renaissance periods, stained glass windows, and carved wooden choir stalls. The church organ, installed in 1978, is a highlight, boasting 30 stops and serving as a venue for concerts. Since 1523, following Chur's embrace of the Reformation, St. Martin's Church has been a central part of the Reformed tradition. Today, the Reformierte Martinskirche is not only a place of worship but also a focal point for cultural gatherings and community events.
