Waaghaus: A Historical Landmark in St. Gallen

The Waaghaus, a protected monument in St. Gallen's old town, stands as a testament to the city's rich history and architectural heritage. Constructed between 1584 and 1585, it originally served as a trade hall where goods were weighed, taxed, and stored. The name "Waaghaus" comes from the German word "Waag," meaning scale, reflecting its original purpose. Over the centuries, the Waaghaus has adapted to the changing needs of the city. In the 19th century, with the advent of the railway, its original function became obsolete. It briefly housed the police station before transforming into a post office in 1876, a role it maintained until 1958. In 1958, the population decided to preserve and renovate the Waaghaus. Today, the open ground floor hosts markets and public gatherings, while the upper floor houses a versatile space for exhibitions and concerts. The western part of the upper floor serves as the council chamber for meetings of the St. Gallen city parliament. The Waaghaus has several striking features. The large entrance gates on the ground floor, once used for carts, are particularly noticeable. The building's exterior is adorned with a clock featuring a moon phase indicator, and the roof turret with its onion dome is a nod to the architectural style of the period. The Waaghaus is not just a relic of the past but a living monument that continues to serve the people of St. Gallen.
