Discover more about Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein

The Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, opened in November 2000, stands as a beacon of modern and contemporary art in the heart of Vaduz. Designed by Swiss architects Meinrad Morger, Heinrich Degelo, and Christian Kerez, the museum's architecture is as captivating as the art it houses. The building's exterior is a 'black box' constructed of tinted concrete and black basalt stone, with river pebbles embedded in the facade, creating a shimmering, reflective surface. The museum's collection represents a significant portion of Liechtenstein's state art collection, featuring international modern and contemporary art from the 19th century to the present. The acquisition policy emphasizes works from the 20th and 21st centuries, particularly sculptures and installations, with a focus on independent artistic positions. Abstract and minimal art, conceptual art, and Arte Povera are well-represented, alongside anthropological approaches found in symbolism, futurism, and surrealism. In 2015, the museum expanded with the addition of the Hilti Art Foundation exhibition building, a cube-shaped structure designed by Morger Partner Architekten. This extension houses an important private collection of classical modern and contemporary art, extending the museum's reach to 130 years of art history. The Hilti Art Foundation building is connected to the Kunstmuseum via a shared entrance. Inside the Kunstmuseum, six exhibition rooms are arranged around two staircases, providing ample space for the art. The upper level receives daylight through a glass ceiling. The museum also has a café where visitors can relax.
