Šlavės Exposure, or Šlavės atodanga, is a remarkable geological site located in the Anykščiai Pinewood (Anykščių šilelis) along the Šlavė River in Lithuania. This 19-meter-high and 66-meter-long exposure is not just another pretty cliff; it's a window into geological history. What makes it special is that it's the only place in the Baltic and Scandinavian regions where sediments from the oldest interglacial period, known as the Šlavė interglacial, have been found. The slopes of the Šlavė valley showcase formations from three distinct geological systems: Devonian, Neogene, and Quaternary. Here, you can observe pre-glacial Quaternary deposits that formed at the very beginning of the Quaternary period when the Scandinavian glaciers were just starting to take shape. The exposure reveals a fascinating sequence of geological layers, including grey clay, dark grey silty aleurite, bluish-grey clay, grey aleurite, peaty clay, quartz sand, and various layers of sand and aleurite. To make the site accessible and informative for visitors, the area has been equipped with road signs, a reinforced path along the winding Šlavė River (complete with stairs and a bridge), a rest area, and an informational stand. Šlavės Exposure has been declared a state geological natural heritage object in 2007 to preserve the Quaternary and Neogene rocks.
