Car
From the Sugarloaf Mountain area, head southeast on Route 27. Continue for about 12 miles until you reach the town of Newry. In Newry, turn left onto Sunday River Road. Drive approximately 1.5 miles along Sunday River Road, keeping an eye out for the marked parking area on your right. Once you park, follow the short trail that leads to Frenchman’s Hole.
Public Transportation
If you are using public transportation, first take a bus or shuttle service from Sugarloaf Mountain to the nearest town with bus services, which is Carrabassett Valley. From Carrabassett Valley, you will need to take a taxi or rideshare service to Newry. Once in Newry, use the same directions as above by heading to Sunday River Road. It is advisable to check the local bus schedules in advance as they may have limited service.
Walking
If you are already in the vicinity of Frenchman’s Hole and prefer to walk, ensure you have a map or GPS device. From the parking area, follow the clearly marked trail leading from Sunday River Road. The hike to Frenchman’s Hole is short, approximately 0.3 miles, and relatively easy, making it accessible for most visitors.
