Car
If you are traveling by car in Mulanje Mountain, start from the town center of Mulanje. Head southeast on the M1 highway towards the Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve. Once you reach the entrance of the reserve, look for signs directing you towards Maciço de Mulanje. The drive should take approximately 30 minutes depending on road conditions. Parking is available at the base of the mountain, but be sure to check for any parking fees, which may apply.
Public Transportation
To reach Maciço de Mulanje via public transportation, take a minibus from the Mulanje bus station heading towards the Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve. The fare is usually around 500 MWK (Malawi Kwacha). Inform the driver that you are going to the reserve, and they will drop you off at the entrance. From there, you may need to hike approximately 3 kilometers to reach the base of Maciço de Mulanje. Ensure you have comfortable hiking shoes as the terrain can be uneven.
Hiking
After reaching the entrance of the Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve by car or minibus, you will need to hike to reach Maciço de Mulanje. Follow the marked trails from the entrance, which are well-maintained but can be steep. It is advisable to hire a local guide for safety and to enhance your experience, which may cost around 20,000 MWK for a day's hike. Make sure to carry enough water and snacks for the hike, as there are limited facilities along the way.
