Car
If you are driving to Mulanje Massif, start from Mulanje town. Head south on the M1 road. After about 15 kilometers, take a left turn onto the road leading towards Mulanje Mountain. Continue on this road for approximately 10 kilometers until you reach the entrance to Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve. There is a small entrance fee of around 1,000 MWK (Malawian Kwacha) per person that you will need to pay at the gate. After entering, follow the signs to the specific trailheads or lodges that you intend to visit within the massif.
Public Transportation - Minibus
To reach Mulanje Massif via public transportation, take a minibus from Blantyre to Mulanje. Buses leave frequently from the Blantyre bus station and the fare is approximately 1,500 MWK. Once you arrive in Mulanje town, you can catch another minibus that goes towards Mulanje Mountain. Make sure to ask the driver to drop you off at the entrance of the Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve. The fare for this short ride is around 500 MWK. Upon arrival, you will need to pay the entrance fee of 1,000 MWK per person.
Walking/Guided Tours
Once you've entered the Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve, there are several walking paths and guided tours available. If you prefer a guided experience, you can hire a local guide at the entrance. The cost of a guide may vary, but it typically ranges from 10,000 MWK to 20,000 MWK for a full day. Make sure to discuss the options with the guide to choose a suitable trail based on your fitness level and interests. The main trails lead to various scenic viewpoints and waterfalls, and it's highly recommended to carry water and snacks during your hike.
