History of Nusajaya

From Rural Land to Iskandar Malaysia

The area now associated with Nusajaya was historically part of the wider rural and semi-rural landscape west of Johor Bahru, rather than an established urban quarter. Its transformation began within the Iskandar Development Region, launched in 2006 as a major programme to develop southern Johor through new centres for administration, business, education, tourism and housing. Nusajaya was selected as the principal new urban node, reflecting the wider strategy of extending Johor Bahru’s economic reach towards the western end of the state.

Building a New Administrative Centre

A central purpose of Nusajaya was to relocate and consolidate Johor’s state administrative functions in a purpose-built setting. Kota Iskandar, named after Sultan Iskandar of Johor, developed as the state government precinct and includes the state legislative assembly complex, government offices, formal squares and Masjid Kota Iskandar. Its architecture draws on Malay and Johorean references while using the scale and planning language of a modern civic centre. The precinct gave the emerging development an institutional focus beyond housing and commercial construction.

The Rise of Medini and Puteri Harbour

During the 2010s, Nusajaya’s identity broadened through large-scale investment in leisure, hospitality, retail and waterfront development. Medini became associated with Legoland Malaysia Resort, which opened in 2012 and established the area as a family tourism destination. Puteri Harbour developed as a marina-led precinct with apartments, hotels, restaurants and public waterfront space. These projects changed Nusajaya from an administrative and property-development concept into a recognisable visitor destination, although its districts remained physically dispersed.

From Nusajaya to Iskandar Puteri

The planned city was renamed Iskandar Puteri in 2015, aligning its formal identity more closely with the wider Iskandar Malaysia development region and Johor’s royal heritage. The older name Nusajaya remains widely encountered in travel searches, property descriptions and local conversation. Contemporary Iskandar Puteri continues to expand through residential, educational, commercial and leisure projects, with its character defined by planned precincts and major destinations rather than by the tightly woven historic urban fabric found in central Johor Bahru.
