4.7

Huvadhu Atoll, also known as Gaafu Atoll, is a hidden gem in the southern Maldives, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. As one of the largest and deepest atolls in the Maldives, it encompasses a vast area of 3,152 km², with 255 islands, only a fraction of which are inhabited. This remote paradise is divided into two administrative districts: Northern Huvadhu Atoll (Gaafu Alifu) and Southern Huvadhu Atoll (Gaafu Dhaalu). The atoll's isolation has preserved its pristine environment and authentic Maldivian culture. Divers and snorkelers will be captivated by the vibrant coral reefs, diverse marine life, and underwater landscapes, including caves and steep drop-offs. Expect to encounter manta rays, sharks, colorful fish, and other pelagic species. Popular dive sites include Maarehaa, Kondey Coral Gardens, Gemana Fushi, and Villigili Kandu. Beyond its underwater wonders, Huvadhu Atoll offers secluded beaches, ancient Buddhist ruins, and traditional Maldivian villages. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture by engaging with friendly locals, learning about traditional fishing techniques, and savoring fresh seafood. Huvadhu Atoll has a rich history, with evidence of ancient settlements dating back to before the 2nd century BC. The atoll was also involved in the breakaway United Suvadive Republic in 1959, which survived until 1963. The local dialect, Huvadu Bas, is significantly different from other variants of the Maldivian language, reflecting the atoll's isolation.
