Discover more about L'obélisque des idéogrammes

Located in Bamako's Commune IV, in the Hamdallaye ACI 2000 neighborhood, L'obélisque des idéogrammes is a monument dedicated to the N'ko writing system and, more broadly, to African writing traditions. The obelisk serves as a reminder of African culture. The monument's architecture features a quadrangular block emerging from a raised circular tower, accessible by stairs. The quadrilateral column, topped with a pyramidal summit, draws inspiration from ancient Egyptian art. Its four sides are engraved with texts in N'ko, Bozo, Bambara, and Dogon ideograms, with French translations provided. The monument is composed of 25 figures, demonstrating the existence of precepts of writing specific to Africa in the past. The monument was erected under the presidency of Alpha Oumar Konaré, with the support of his Minister of Culture, Pascal Baba Koulibali. The ideographic inscriptions engraved on the building are in N'Ko, an African script created in 1949 for the Mandingo languages of West Africa. These writings evoke the resilience of Mandé, the current Mali, compared to a boat that sways on the waves without ever capsizing. The obelisk recalls the megaliths of Tondi Darou (near Goundam, northern Mali) and symbolizes unity. Surrounding the obelisk, a lively atmosphere often prevails as locals gather, providing tourists with an opportunity to immerse themselves in Bamako's vibrant culture.
