The Grande Mosquée de Mopti-Sud, also known as the Komoguel Mosque, is a prominent symbol of Mopti, Mali, reflecting the region's deep Islamic roots and architectural traditions. Constructed between 1933 and 1935, the mosque showcases a unique Sudanese architectural style, mirroring the design of the Great Mosque of Djenné. The mosque is made with local materials like mud brick, demonstrating an architecture well-suited to the hot Sahelian climate.The mosque's design features imposing mudbrick walls, towering minarets, and detailed wooden pillars. The building is rectangular, measuring 31 meters long and 17 meters wide, with a height of 15 meters. The structure includes a covered section and a courtyard, surrounded by a perimeter wall ranging from 2.40 to 2.90 meters in height. The prayer hall covers approximately 360 square meters.Maintenance of the Grande Mosquée de Mopti-Sud is a community endeavor. Each year, locals gather to refresh the structure with a new layer of mud and rice straw. The mosque was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on March 19, 2009.
