Discover more about Inland Sea Dive Site

The Inland Sea, also known as Qawra in Maltese, is a unique geological formation on the island of Gozo. It is a lagoon of seawater linked to the open Mediterranean Sea via a narrow, natural tunnel carved through the cliffs of Dwejra Point. This tunnel, approximately 80 meters long, was formed over time by the relentless action of waves creating a sea cave, whose roof eventually collapsed. The resulting depression, measuring between 300 and 400 meters in diameter, filled with seawater, creating the stunning Inland Sea. For centuries, the Inland Sea has served as a haven for local fishermen. Today, they supplement their income by offering boat trips to tourists through the tunnel, providing spectacular views of the Dwejra cliffs, caves, and the site of the collapsed Azure Window. The Azure Window, a natural arch that was once a prominent landmark, collapsed in 2017, but its remains can still be seen from the boat tours. The Inland Sea is also a popular destination for divers. Jacques Cousteau is said to have ranked it among his top ten dives. Divers can explore the tunnel and the marine life that inhabits its walls, with depths reaching up to 25 meters. The site is teeming with diverse marine life, including nudibranchs, John Dory, combers, wrasse, sea hares, and tube anemones. However, divers should be aware of boat traffic in the tunnel, especially during peak season. Beyond diving and boat tours, the Inland Sea offers a tranquil pebble beach perfect for swimming and sunbathing. The surrounding cliffs provide shelter from the wind, making it an ideal spot for relaxation. Visitors can also explore the nearby Dwejra Tower, a 17th-century watchtower built by the Knights of Malta, and the Fungus Rock, a unique geological formation with a rich history.
