Casa Bernard: A Glimpse into Maltese Aristocratic Life

Step back in time at Casa Bernard, a beautifully restored 16th-century palazzo in Rabat, offering a personal glimpse into Maltese aristocratic life.

4.5

Casa Bernard is more than just a historic building; it's a living testament to Malta's rich past. Located in Rabat, just outside the walls of Mdina, this 16th-century palazzo began as a medieval watchtower on Roman foundations. Over the centuries, it transformed into the elegant home you see today, reflecting various architectural styles and historical periods. The palazzo derives its name from Dr. Salvatore Bernard, a physician of French origin who served the Grand Master of Malta in 1723. The Bernard family resided here until the 20th century. In 1993, Georges and Josette Magri, retired schoolteachers, acquired the property and embarked on an extensive restoration project, turning it into a 'very personal museum'. Guided tours, often conducted by the owners themselves, take you through the barrel-vaulted hallway, the family chapel (which incorporates Roman arches in the cellar), the dining room, three drawing rooms, the library, and the main bedroom. The rooms are filled with collections of paintings, furniture, silverware and objets d'art, each with its own story. The tour concludes with a visit to the courtyard and garden. Casa Bernard won a Europa Nostra award in 2006 for its restoration.
