The Inland Sea, or Il-Qawra in Maltese, is a remarkable geological formation in Dwejra, Gozo. This lagoon was created when a sea cave, formed by a geological fault in the limestone, collapsed. The result is a stunning, almost circular pool of seawater enclosed by towering cliffs.The highlight of the Inland Sea is the underwater tunnel that connects it to the open Mediterranean. This 80-meter-long tunnel is a popular spot for divers, offering a unique experience as they swim through the cave and emerge into the deep blue sea. The walls of the tunnel are adorned with sponges, corals, and marine life, creating a vibrant underwater landscape. Jacques Cousteau allegedly listed the Inland Sea as one of his top ten dives.Even for non-divers, the Inland Sea offers plenty to enjoy. Getting There
Bus
From Victoria, Gozo's capital, take bus 311 directly to Dwejra. The bus stop is located a short walk from the Inland Sea. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes, and buses run hourly. Check the Malta Public Transport website for the most up-to-date schedule. A single bus ticket costs around €2.
Car
From the Mġarr ferry terminal, follow signs to Victoria, then to San Lawrenz and Dwejra. The drive takes approximately 20 minutes. There is a free public parking area near the Inland Sea. Parking can be limited during peak season. Be aware of parking restrictions, such as yellow bays reserved for residents.
Walking
From the Dwejra bus stop or parking area, it is a short, easy walk to the Inland Sea. Follow the paved path towards the coast. The path leads directly to the lagoon and the small pebble beach.
