Discover more about Mġarr ix-Xini

Mġarr ix-Xini is a stunning bay located on the southern coast of Gozo, a Maltese island renowned for its natural beauty. The bay is characterized by its narrow inlet, flanked by rocky cliffs and lush vegetation, leading to a small, pebbly beach. The crystal-clear turquoise waters are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving, with abundant marine life and intriguing underwater caves to explore. Historically, Mġarr ix-Xini served as a small harbor and was used by the Knights of Malta. In 1551, invading Turks used the bay to load captive Gozitans onto their ships. To protect the area, the Knights built a watchtower in 1661, which still stands guard over the entrance to the inlet. The tower was one of several built by Grand Master Martin de Redin to defend the coastline. The tower has two floors, each with a single room, and was manned by a castellan and bombardier. The bay's secluded setting within a steep-sided valley contributes to its tranquil atmosphere. The bay gained further recognition in 2015 when CNN listed it as a top 10 place to visit before it changed forever. It also served as a filming location for the movie 'By the Sea,' starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Despite its increasing popularity, Mġarr ix-Xini remains a relatively uncrowded and serene destination, perfect for a relaxing Gozitan afternoon.
