Discover more about Natural Science Museum

The Gozo Nature Museum, situated in the heart of Victoria's Cittadella, provides an engaging exploration of the natural history of Gozo. The museum is housed within a cluster of three interconnected domestic buildings dating back to the 17th century, which once served as an inn and later as a refuge during World War II. The museum's collection is spread across two floors and a garden, each offering a unique perspective on Gozo's natural environment. The ground floor focuses on geology, minerals, human and animal evolution, and marine life. Visitors can examine fossils dating back millions of years, as well as a collection of minerals donated by Dr. Lewis Mizzi, a Gozitan mineralogist. A highlight is the small specimen of moon rock brought back by the Apollo 11 crew and gifted by President Richard Nixon. The upper floor showcases the ecosystems of the Maltese Islands, with a particular emphasis on Gozo. Exhibits include collections of insects, migratory birds, and indigenous plants such as the Maltese Rock Centaury. The museum also has a small garden dedicated to garigue flora and other native plants. Stepping into the Gozo Nature Museum is like stepping back in time, with the building itself whispering stories of centuries past. From its days as a bustling inn to its role as a sanctuary during wartime, the museum's walls have witnessed the ebb and flow of Gozitan life. Today, it stands as a testament to the island's commitment to preserving its natural heritage, inviting visitors to discover the wonders that lie within its shores.
