Discover more about Salt Pans

The Xwejni Salt Pans are located on the northern coast of Gozo, near the village of Żebbuġ. This remarkable site showcases a traditional method of salt production that has been passed down through generations. The pans themselves are shallow, square pools carved into the coastal rock, designed to harness the power of the sun and wind to evaporate seawater. Salt production in this area is believed to date back to Roman times, with families like the Cini family maintaining the tradition since the 19th century. During the summer months, seawater is channeled into the pans, where it gradually evaporates, leaving behind crystallized salt. The salt is then harvested manually using traditional tools and methods. Visitors to the Xwejni Salt Pans can witness this process firsthand and learn about the history and cultural significance of salt production in Gozo. The unique landscape of the salt pans, with their geometric patterns and shimmering white crystals, also offers excellent photo opportunities. The salt harvested from these pans is sold in local shops as a souvenir and is valued for its mineral content and traditional production methods.
