Villa Rundle Gardens: A Gozitan Oasis

Villa Rundle Gardens, situated in the heart of Victoria (Rabat), Gozo, is a beautifully maintained public garden that provides a tranquil escape for both locals and tourists. Established in 1915, the gardens are named after British General Leslie Rundle, who was the Governor of Malta from 1909 to 1915. The gardens were originally part of an experimental farm set up by the British to help local farmers improve their livestock. Designed to resemble the layout of the Union Jack, the gardens are divided into sections that reflect the changing seasons. The pathways meander through a diverse collection of native and imported trees, including Ficus nitida and Canary palms, offering shade during the hot summer months. The gardens also feature a central water fountain, creating a peaceful ambiance for visitors. Villa Rundle Gardens is not only a haven for plant lovers but also a family-friendly destination. An aviary houses a variety of colorful birds, and a mini-amphitheater hosts concerts and live performances. The gardens also hold the annual Santa Marija Agricultural Show in mid-August, a popular event that draws large crowds. Throughout the year, Villa Rundle serves as a venue for various events, including open-air shows and the Easter Egg Hunt. Musical benches provide a unique experience, allowing visitors to listen to Maltese music. Busts of Gozitan linguist Agius de Soldanis and writer Laurent Rapa, along with other sculptures, add to the garden's cultural richness. The gardens were renovated in 2009 and reopened in 2012, enhancing their appeal with a herb garden and a selective planting scheme that keeps the beds colorful year-round.
