Discover more about Wied il-Għasri

Wied il-Għasri, also known as the Għasri Valley, is a remarkable natural wonder located on the northern coast of Gozo, Malta's sister island. This secluded sea canyon is a deep, gorge-like valley carved by the sea into the lower Coralline Limestone and Globerigerina Limestone, creating impressive cliffs that rise sharply from the azure waters. The valley begins inland near Ta' Dbieġi Hill, winding its way through the village of Għasri, between iż-Żebbuġ and Ta' Ġurdan Hill, before meeting the Mediterranean Sea. The small, pebbly beach at the end of the valley is accessible via steps cut into the cliff face. The secluded bay is a haven for those seeking tranquility and is popular for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. Divers are drawn to the underwater caves that surround the area. Historically, Wied il-Għasri has an intriguing past. In the 18th century, a Maltese clockmaker owned the inner part of the valley and dug a well in a sea cave entrance, creating what is now known as Għar il-Qamħ (Grain Cave). The valley may have also served as a shelter for fishermen and travelers. A cave with a shaft leading to the top of the cliffs was once used to hoist seawater to fill neighboring salt pans. Today, Wied il-Għasri offers a dramatic display of nature's power and beauty, especially during winter and spring. The surrounding area is adorned with prickly pears and capers growing on the dry stone walls, and in late spring, red poppies carpet the landscape.
