Exploring the Historic Plum Island Lighthouse

Getting There

• Car

  Start by heading south on State Street from downtown Newburyport. Continue straight onto Merrimack Street, then take a right onto Water Street. Follow Water Street until it turns into Plum Island Turnpike. Continue straight on Plum Island Turnpike, which will take you onto Plum Island. Follow the road until you reach Harbor Street. The Plum Island Lighthouse will be located at Harbor Street, Newburyport, MA 01950. There is limited parking available nearby. Note that some areas may require a parking fee, so be prepared for potential costs.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Plum Island Lighthouse by public transportation, start at the Newburyport MBTA station. Take the #67 bus towards Newburyport – Plum Island. The bus will drop you off at the intersection of Plum Island Turnpike and Harbor Street. From there, it is a short walk to the lighthouse. Be sure to check the bus schedule in advance for the latest timings and any potential fares, which may vary.

• Bicycle

  If you prefer to cycle, you can rent a bike in Newburyport. Start at Market Square and head towards Merrimack Street. Follow the bike paths along Water Street and onto Plum Island Turnpike. The ride will take you directly to Harbor Street, where the Plum Island Lighthouse is located. Make sure to wear a helmet and follow all cycling regulations. There are no dedicated bike parking facilities, but you can lock your bike to a nearby post.

• Walking

  If you're staying close to the waterfront, you can walk to Plum Island Lighthouse. Begin your walk along the riverfront at Waterfront Park. Follow the path along the Merrimack River towards the Plum Island Turnpike. Once you reach the bridge, cross over and continue on Plum Island Turnpike until you reach Harbor Street. The lighthouse is a short walk from there. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as the walk can take about 45 minutes from the downtown area.
