Bus
From Tuxtla Gutiérrez, take a bus to Palenque. The bus terminal is located in the city center. Look for ADO or OCC bus services which operate multiple times daily. The journey takes around 5-6 hours. Once in Palenque, you will need to find another bus to Bonampak. Head to the local bus terminal in Palenque and look for buses heading to 'Bonampak' or 'Lacanjá'. This journey will take approximately 2-3 hours.
Collectivo
After reaching Palenque, you can also opt for a collectivo (shared taxi) to Bonampak. These collectivos leave from the main bus terminal. Ensure to ask for one specifically going to Bonampak. This option is faster and may take about 1.5-2 hours. The price is usually reasonable, and you can share the ride with other travelers.
Guided Tour
Consider joining a guided tour from Palenque that includes Bonampak as part of the itinerary. Many local tour operators offer day trips that cover both Bonampak and the nearby Yaxchilan ruins, often providing transportation and a guide. This can be a convenient way to learn the history and significance of the sites while ensuring you have a smooth travel experience.
