Discover more about Melrose

Melrose stands as one of the best-preserved historic estates in the South, a testament to the wealth and culture of the antebellum era. Constructed between 1841 and 1845 for John T. McMurran, a successful lawyer and planter, the 15,000-square-foot mansion exemplifies Greek Revival architecture. McMurran, inspired by Melrose Abbey in Scotland, named his estate 'Melrose', envisioning a grand home surrounded by lush gardens. The estate's grounds feature the main house, a carriage house, a two-story brick kitchen, a dairy barn, and slave quarters, offering a comprehensive view of plantation life. The mansion itself boasts a full-height front entry porch with Doric columns and a two-story colonnaded porch at the rear. Inside, visitors can admire ornate plasterwork, marble mantels, and original furnishings, meticulously preserved to offer an authentic view of antebellum wealth. Melrose reflects Natchez's prosperity during the cotton economy's peak. The McMurran family used the mansion as a seasonal home, hosting lavish social events. During the Civil War, the mansion was temporarily used as a Union Army headquarters and hospital. In 1990, the National Park Service acquired Melrose, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Today, visitors can take guided tours of the mansion and explore the grounds to learn about the lives of the McMurran family and the enslaved people who were integral to the estate's operations.
