Discover more about Memorial Arch

The Memorial Arch, standing proudly at the entrance to Vicksburg National Military Park, serves as a poignant reminder of reconciliation following the American Civil War. Dedicated in 1920, the arch was conceived after a 1917 reunion of Federal and Confederate soldiers who had fought at Vicksburg. With remaining funds from a congressional appropriation for the reunion, the arch was built to commemorate this historic gathering and promote lasting peace. Sculpted by Charles Lawhon from Stone Mountain, Georgia granite, the arch originally stood over Clay Street, a main thoroughfare. However, in 1967, it was moved to its current location within the park due to traffic concerns. Today, the Memorial Arch welcomes visitors from around the world, inviting them to explore the stories and sacrifices of the Vicksburg Campaign. As the iconic symbol of Vicksburg National Military Park, the Memorial Arch represents a gateway to understanding a pivotal time in American history. Its presence encourages reflection on the importance of peace and unity, honoring the soldiers who fought while also looking forward to a future defined by reconciliation.
