The Minnesota Memorial, located on Union Avenue within Vicksburg National Military Park, is a poignant tribute to the soldiers from Minnesota who fought in the Vicksburg Campaign. Dedicated on May 24, 1907, the memorial serves as a lasting symbol of their bravery and sacrifice during one of the most critical battles of the American Civil War.The memorial itself is a striking 90-foot tall white granite column. On the north and south sides of the column's foundation, the word 'Minnesota' is sculpted. At the base, a raised bronze statue of a woman, sculpted by William Couper, represents the 'Statue of Peace'. She holds a sword and shield from both the Union and Confederate armies, symbolizing the end of conflict and the hope for reconciliation. The statue signifies both armies placing their weapons in her keeping.The Vicksburg Campaign was a turning point in the Civil War, and the participation of Minnesota troops was significant. The memorial stands as a testament to their contribution and the broader themes of courage, sacrifice, and the pursuit of peace. The memorial cost $24,000 at the time of its construction. Today, with inflation, it would cost closer to a million dollars.

    Driving

    The Minnesota Memorial is located on Union Avenue, at milepost 0.6 of the park's 16-mile tour road. From the Vicksburg National Military Park Visitor Center at 3201 Clay Street, drive south on Clay Street, then turn left onto Union Avenue. The memorial will be on your right. There is a $20 entrance fee per vehicle, which grants access to the park for seven days.

    Walking

    If you are already within Vicksburg National Military Park, follow the walking paths along Union Avenue. The memorial is located 0.6 miles south of the intersection of Union Avenue and Clay Street. The park is well-signed. Be aware that some areas, like North Union Avenue and Louisiana Circle, may be closed for repairs.
