Mississippi Monument: A Tribute to Valor and Sacrifice
A towering monument in Vicksburg National Military Park honoring the brave Mississippi soldiers of the Civil War.
Located on Confederate Avenue within Vicksburg National Military Park, the Mississippi Monument stands as a poignant tribute to the soldiers from Mississippi who served during the Civil War. Dedicated on November 13, 1909, the monument serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the Siege of Vicksburg. The monument itself is constructed from Mount Airy, NC Granite and stands 76 feet high. The bronze work at the base of the monument depicts various actions of the Mississippi troops during the Siege of Vicksburg. At the front of the monument stands a statue of Clio, the Muse of History, sculpted by Frederick E. Triebel. The monument was damaged by lightning in 1951 and subsequently repaired in 1954. The Mississippi State Memorial is located at milepost 12.3 of the park tour road.

Getting There

Driving
From the Vicksburg National Military Park Visitor Center (3201 Clay Street), head south on Clay Street towards the park entrance. After entering the park, follow the signs for Confederate Avenue. Continue on Confederate Avenue for approximately 2 miles. The Mississippi Monument will be on your left, just past the intersection with the tour road. Entrance to the park is $20 per vehicle, valid for seven days.

Walking
If you are already inside Vicksburg National Military Park and are near the Visitor Center, you can walk to the Mississippi Monument. Head south on Confederate Avenue from the Visitor Center. The walk is approximately 2 miles and should take about 40 minutes. The monument will be on your left side as you approach.
