Crisp Museum: A Cultural Crossroads

The Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum, situated on the scenic River Campus of Southeast Missouri State University, serves as a vibrant center for exploring the cultural heritage and artistic expression of the region. Originally established as the University Museum, it was renamed in 2001 and found its permanent home on the River Campus in 2007.The museum's exhibits encompass a wide range of interests, featuring both historical artifacts and fine art. The archaeological collections are particularly noteworthy, displaying items excavated from prehistoric effigy mounds in Missouri, including rare ceramic conch shell effigies, pottery, and stone tools that span from the Paleo-Indian to the Late Mississippian periods. Other Native American artifacts include Kachina dolls, Southwestern blankets, baskets, and beadwork. History buffs will appreciate the military items, firearms, clothing, and hand tools that offer a glimpse into the past. The museum also features the Golden Eagle River Museum collection, including a large pilot's wheel.In addition to its historical collections, the Crisp Museum showcases a diverse array of fine art. Visitors can explore temporary art exhibitions throughout the year, displaying the talents of local artists and touring professionals. The museum also hosts student, faculty, and regional history exhibitions. The Crossroads Theatre presents a video highlighting Southeast Missouri's heritage, focusing on the people and the land. The museum provides educational opportunities for all ages, including creative classes and workshops.
