Discover more about Rockcliffe Mansion

Rockcliffe Mansion, a majestic landmark in Hannibal, Missouri, stands as a testament to the Gilded Age. Constructed between 1898 and 1900 for John J. Cruikshank, Jr., a wealthy lumber baron, the mansion showcases a blend of Georgian Revival and Beaux-Arts architectural styles. Cruikshank envisioned a home that would not only display his wealth but also exude warmth and dignity. The 13,500-square-foot mansion boasts over 30 rooms, including ten ornate bedrooms and seven bathrooms, filled with original antique furnishings, priceless Tiffany lighting fixtures, and hand-carved woodwork. The mansion also features magnificent Palladian windows and fine interior decorations from America and Europe. Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) himself graced the halls of Rockcliffe, addressing Hannibal society from the grand staircase during his last visit in 1902. After Cruikshank's death in 1924, the mansion remained vacant for 43 years, nearly facing demolition in 1967. Saved at the last minute, it has since been restored and opened to the public as a museum and boutique bed and breakfast. Today, visitors can take guided tours to explore the mansion's grand interiors and learn about its rich history or even spend a night in one of the restored rooms. Rockcliffe Mansion is open for tours from April 15th to November 15th.
