The Lohman Building, also known as Lohman's Landing Building, is a significant historical landmark in Jefferson City, Missouri. Constructed in 1839 by James A. Crump, it is the last remaining building of its kind along the Missouri River, connecting present-day citizens with the pioneers who founded the town.Initially known as Jefferson Landing Building, it served as a vital hub during the pre-railroad era, facilitating the transfer of goods and passengers arriving via steamboat. In 1852, Charles Lohman and his brother-in-law Charles Maus purchased the building, transforming it into a merchandising center. The building housed a grocery store, warehouse, tavern, and even a telegraph office, becoming a center of cultural and commercial life.As river traffic declined, the building transitioned into storage and tenement use, later serving as a warehouse for the Tweedie Shoe Corporation. In the 1960s, the state acquired the property, initially with plans for demolition. However, a local preservation effort led to its restoration, and on July 4, 1976, it was dedicated as part of the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site.Today, the Lohman Building functions as a visitor center, offering exhibits and a film about the history of Jefferson City and its role as the state capital.
