The Poplar Bluff Amtrak Station is more than just a place to catch a train; it's a piece of the city's history. Built in 1910 by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway, the station has witnessed the evolution of Poplar Bluff from a logging town to the 'Gateway to the Ozarks'. The station was renamed the Missouri Pacific Depot in 1917 and the Union Pacific Depot in 1983.In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Poplar Bluff thrived as a railroad town, with numerous hotels and boarding houses near the depot. The original depot on the site, constructed in 1873, was replaced in 1890 but burned down shortly after completion. The current station, with its Colonial Revival-influenced architecture, stands as a testament to the city's resilience and commitment to preserving its heritage. While the station has undergone changes over the years, including a period of decline and restoration efforts, it continues to serve as an important transportation hub for the region. Although the interior has been gutted, the exterior retains its historic charm, and the community remains dedicated to its preservation. The station is on the National Register of Historic Places.
