Dillon House: A Glimpse into Phelps County's Past

The Dillon House, situated at 302 W 3rd St in Rolla, Missouri, offers a unique glimpse into the early history of Phelps County. Constructed in 1838 by Levi L. Snelson in Dillon, Missouri, it is a hand-hewn log structure that served as the county's first courthouse.Phelps County was established in 1857, and the Dillon House played a vital role in its early governance. County circuit court meetings were held within its walls until the county seat was permanently located to Rolla. The decision to locate the county seat in Rolla was made in 1861.In the late 1960s, the Dillon House was moved to Rolla and transformed into a museum by the Phelps County Historical Society. Today, it houses a collection of artifacts that illustrate the history of Phelps County and its people. Exhibits include items related to the Frisco Railroad and a recreation of the J.M. Dent store. The Phelps County Historical Society continues to add to the museum's collection through donations and research.The Phelps County Historical Society acquired the Dillon Log House and the Old Courthouse in the 1990s.
