War Eagle Mill: A Working Piece of Arkansas History

War Eagle Mill is more than just a picturesque landmark; it's a living piece of Arkansas history. Established in 1832 by Sylvanus and Catherine Blackburn, the mill quickly became the heart of the War Eagle Valley, providing essential services like grinding grain and sawing lumber. The original mill was washed away by a flood in 1848, but the Blackburns rebuilt, adding a sawmill to their thriving business.The Civil War brought turmoil to the valley, and the mill was burned down by Confederate soldiers in 1862 to prevent its use by the Union Army. The Blackburns returned after the war and rebuilt once more, but another fire in 1924 left the mill in ruins for nearly 50 years.In 1971, the Medlin family purchased the land and, captivated by its history, rebuilt the mill in 1973. They revived the undershot water wheel and focused on producing organic grains, flours, and cereals. Today, War Eagle Mill is the only working gristmill in Arkansas and possibly the only undershot mill in the United States. Visitors can witness the milling process, explore the general store, and enjoy a meal at the Blackburn Cafe, located on the third floor of the mill. The surrounding scenery, including the War Eagle Creek and the historic War Eagle Bridge, adds to the mill's charm and makes it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.The mill also hosts events throughout the year, including the War Eagle Craft Fair in the fall, drawing artisans and visitors from across the country.
