The Zoo of Chișinău, officially opened on May 9, 1978, has grown into a significant cultural and recreational institution in Moldova's capital. Initially home to around 60 animal species, the zoo's collection has expanded to include over 1,000 animals representing about 138 species, including mammals, reptiles, and birds. These creatures come from various corners of the globe, with ten species involved in international conservation programs. The zoo actively participates in international breeding programs, contributing to the conservation of endangered species like the Przewalski's horse and the Amur tiger. The zoo's layout integrates animal enclosures into a park-like setting, offering visitors a chance to observe wildlife in environments designed to mimic their natural habitats. Visitors can explore various sections, including a large pond inhabited by waterfowl like geese, ducks, swans and herons. The zoo also features an extensive area with aviaries housing different bird species, particularly birds of prey. The facilities for smaller felines were upgraded in 2022 to meet modern zoological standards, ensuring the animals can be viewed even during colder months with heated enclosures and glass panels. Besides its recreational role, the Zoo of Chișinău is deeply involved in environmental education, offering guided tours, interactive exhibits, and a young biologists' club.
