Codri is the traditional name for Moldova’s central forested uplands, a landscape that historically covered a considerably broader area than the woodland surviving today. Its hills, valleys and fertile soils supported both forest ecosystems and human settlement, while clearance for fields, orchards and vineyards gradually fragmented the original woodland. The remaining forests became important not only for timber and local livelihoods but also for protecting soils, watercourses and native biodiversity. The name Codri continues to express a regional identity as well as a geographical environment.

The central Codri landscape gained formal scientific protection during the Soviet period, most notably through the establishment of the Codru Scientific Reserve in 1971. The reserve was created to conserve representative forest habitats and to support long-term ecological research. Its work helped document Moldova’s woodland plants, animals and changing ecosystems at a time when agricultural expansion and land-use pressure were reshaping the wider countryside. The reserve’s history remains central to understanding present-day conservation in the region.

Human history in the Codri region is visible in its villages, cultivated clearings, vineyards and religious heritage. Căpriana Monastery, in the surrounding wooded landscape, reflects the long relationship between central Moldova’s forests and its monastic institutions. Rural communities traditionally used the surrounding land for agriculture, grazing, orchards and forestry, creating the patchwork of woodland and farmland that visitors see today. These uses did not disappear with conservation, but have increasingly been balanced against the need to protect habitats and limit damaging pressure.

Modern conservation in central Moldova has developed from the scientific-reserve model towards broader landscape protection and public appreciation. The designation of Codru National Park gives the Codri forests a wider identity for nature conservation, education and carefully managed recreation, while the established scientific reserve remains an important reference point within the region’s protected-area story. The national park concept also recognises that woodland conservation is connected to villages, cultural monuments, agricultural land and tourism rather than confined to forest interiors alone.
