The Stephen the Great Monument stands as a prominent landmark in Chișinău, Moldova, commemorating Stephen III of Moldavia, also known as Stephen the Great. As Moldova's greatest ruler, he successfully defended the country from the Turkish invasion in the 15th century. The monument is located outside the main entrance to Stefan cel Mare Park in downtown Chișinău. The statue was cast in Bucharest in the early 20th century and intended to replace the monument to Russian Emperor Alexander II. Sculptor Alexandru Plamadeala studied portraits of Stephen the Great to create the statue. The monument has been moved several times throughout history, including during the Soviet occupation. It was finally restored to its original location in 1989. The statue depicts Stephen the Great standing and wearing sovereign garments. He holds a long sword in his right hand and the Holy Cross in his left hand. The monument is a popular attraction for tourists visiting the Moldovan capital and a site for public gatherings and ceremonies. Flower-laying ceremonies are regularly held at the monument's pedestal on national holidays and during official visits.
